Welcome to The Fearless Foodies: A New Chapter in Food Industry Real Talk
The food industry is an absolutely amazing place to work. But let’s be honest; it can be relentless, overwhelming, and downright lonely. If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing it all wrong in this fast-paced world of constant firefighting and impossible deadlines, I want you to know, you’re not alone, and you’re not doing it wrong.
I’m Amy Wilkinson, and I’m thrilled to welcome you to The Fearless Foodie; a place where we can talk honestly about the highs and lows of working in this demanding industry. I believe there’s so much more to say about thriving (not just surviving!) in the food and retail industry, and I’m here to support you on your journey to find your own version of Fearless.
Why “Fearless” Doesn’t Mean What You Think
Let me clear something up right away: when I talk about being “fearless”, I’m not suggesting you should feel no fear. That’s not realistic, and frankly, it’s not human. We all feel wobbly sometimes when facing the daily challenges of working in food and retail.
Fearlessness isn’t about never feeling afraid – it’s about feeling the fear and showing up anyway. 💪 💪 💪
It’s not about being loud or extroverted. It’s about:
- Being quietly confident
- Learning to say no
- Pushing back when necessary
- Setting healthy boundaries
- Being real instead of wearing a mask
My Wake-Up Call: From Burnout to Purpose
Back in 2012, I learned the hard way what happens when you don’t listen to your body or set boundaries. As a senior commercial manager, I was constantly on, taking calls at anything from five in the morning to ten o’clock at night, trying to be everything to everyone, firefighting non-stop. Can you relate?
One morning, I woke up and couldn’t move my arms or legs. Not because I didn’t want to, but because I physically couldn’t. I had to crawl to the toilet. My body was finally saying “no” after months of chronic stress and illness I’d been ignoring.
I ended up taking three months off work with severe stress-related burnout. It was terrifying, but it changed everything.
When I returned to work, I took off the armour I’d been wearing. I stopped pretending everything was fine. That experience became my mission: to help others avoid the same burnout and build the careers they want without flogging themselves into the ground. And ten years later, Fearless Foodies was born.

Join the Fearless Foodie Movement
This isn’t just about a newsletter, podcast or a business – Fearless Foodies is a movement. Together, we can be the change we want to see in the food industry. My role in this is to challenge you to think differently and be a little bit more fearless each day.
Here are three challenges I have for you this week:
1. Speak Your Truth (Just Once)
The next time you’d normally bite your tongue, try saying what you really think. Frame it positively: “Can I offer a different viewpoint?” or “I’m not sure that’s working – can we discuss it?” Those small moments of honesty create big shifts.
2. Reconnect with Someone You Respect
Reach out to someone in the industry you really admire. I know it feels scary but do it anyway! I was terrified to ask a director from Tesco to be on my podcast but I’m so glad I plucked up the courage to do it. I’ve learned that people are generally nice and want to help, and the worst that can happen is they can say no. Building your network takes courage, but it makes all the difference.
3. Tell Me What You Need
Struggling? Feeling like you’re doing it all? Want something to change? Send me a message and let me know what you’d like The Fearless Foodie to write about – or better yet, how we can work directly with you. This is for you – the person in the trenches of the food industry. I want to help. Fearless Foodies is here for you.
You Don’t Have to Be Perfect
We don’t need more perfect, polished leaders in this world. We need people who are real and honest. The food industry can be messy and challenging, but that doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong – it might just mean something needs to change.
Remember: you don’t have to be completely fearless to thrive. You just have to be willing to learn, reflect, and try some stuff out.
So, here’s to less fluff and more real talk. Here’s to building bolder, braver, more brilliant careers in food and retail.
Be bold, be brave, be fearless. Would you like to talk?
